Five killed in New Year attack in Ukraine
Three people have been killed in the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine and two in the Odesa region in the south of the country, local authorities say.
“Preliminary figures indicate that 13 people have been wounded and four killed,” said Denis Pushilin, the Russian-appointed head of the Ukrainian Donetsk region, where the city of Donetsk is also located, according to the state-run Russian news agency Tass, at 2 a.m. on Monday.
He claimed that Ukrainian forces were behind the attack.
At the same time, Ukraine’s air defense announced at the beginning of the new year that Russia had started a new wave of night attacks against the regions of Mykolaiv, Odesa and Dnipro.
In the Odesa region, one person was killed and three wounded in a Russian drone attack, according to Governor Oleg Kiper. Several buildings were damaged by drones that were shot down, and fires broke out in homes in various parts of the city, according to the governor.
Later on Monday night, there were reports that Lviv, a western region with a border with Poland, was also under Russian attack and that the air defense had been activated there.
