Today, the 1st (New Year’s Day), the sky was clear mainly on the Pacific side, and many places saw the first sunrise of the year. It will rain widely on the third day of the New Year (the 3rd), and snow and wind will be strong on the Sea of Japan side during the three-day weekend starting on the 6th (Saturday). However, the effects of the cold air are temporary, and temperatures are likely to be high in many places until mid-January.
First half (2nd to 8th) Widespread rain on the 3rd; temporary winter storm over the 3-day weekend
Tomorrow (the 2nd) will be covered by high pressure and many places will be sunny during the day, but rain clouds will spread over Kyushu at night as a low pressure system approaches. Hokkaido is also likely to experience wet snow and rain from the evening onwards.
The next day (the 3rd), a low pressure system will move toward the Sea of Japan and the southern coast of Honshu, bringing rain to a wide area from Kyushu to Tohoku. The highest temperature will be around 10 degrees Celsius in many places from the Tokai to the west, and you will be surrounded by cold air. In the Kanto region, where the weather tends to change slowly, it will be warm during the day.
From the 4th to the 5th, many places will be covered in high pressure and it will be sunny. From the Kanto region to the west, there are places where the maximum temperature will rise to around 15 degrees Celsius, so it will be warm and sunny.
The three-day weekend from the 6th to the 8th (Coming of Age Day) is likely to experience rough weather due to a developing low pressure system. In particular, from the 7th to the 8th, winter-like atmospheric pressure patterns will become stronger, so there is a risk of heavy snow and flakes mainly on the Sea of Japan side. Snow clouds are rolling in in places on the Pacific side, and snow is expected in Osaka on the 8th.
Second half (9th to 14th) Temperatures remain high west of Kanto even in mid-January.
The winter-like atmospheric pressure pattern will ease up on the 9th after the holidays, and by the 10th it will become sunny again in many places. The maximum temperature in central Tokyo on the 10th will be 15 degrees Celsius, which will be a cheerful time when the cherry blossoms bloom. Temperatures are also high in northern Japan, with temperatures expected to exceed 0°C in Sapporo during the day on the 9th. Snowfall is expected to increase in areas along the Sea of Japan during the holidays, so be careful of avalanches, falling snow, and deteriorating road conditions.
From the 11th onwards, cold air will flow mainly into northern Japan, so there will be days when snow and winds become stronger on the Sea of Japan side. From Kanto to Kyushu, it will be sunny and there will be many days with maximum temperatures above normal.
January 6th marks the beginning of the cold season due to the 24 solar terms, but there will not be many days this year when it will be extremely cold.
