Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announces abdication after 52 years of reign

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced on Sunday that on January 14, after 52 years of reign, she will abdicate in favor of her son, Crown Prince Frederik.

“I will leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” the queen said in an anniversary address broadcast on Danish public television.

The 83-year-old queen said that time takes its toll and it is no longer possible to do as much as before.

Margrethe II inherited the throne on January 14, 1972 after the death of her father, King Frederik IX.

She is the world’s second longest-reigning monarch after Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, who has been in power since 1967.

Margrethe II had previously stated that she was going to rule until her death, so her abdication announcement comes as a surprise.

The Queen is also known as a book illustrator, including the Danish edition of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and a costume designer. She is also passionate about archeology and has participated in archaeological expeditions.

After ascending the throne, her 55-year-old son will become King Frederick X.

The monarch in Denmark has ceremonial functions.
