President Biden Struggles to Retain Traditional Support as Arab and Immigrant Voters Turn Away

U.S. President Joe Biden, who is running for re-election, is struggling with signs of a departure from traditional supporters such as Arabs, a rapidly increasing number of immigrants from Central and South America, and the aftermath of two wars.

According to CNBC broadcast on December 30 last year, Muslim leaders in the United States announced that they would carry out a campaign across the United States to defeat President Biden, who only sides with Israel, following the outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas. In a statement, they said, “We will save America by excluding Biden from the voting booths,” and raised their voices saying that they would even risk the election of former President Donald Trump, who is hostile to non-whites, through their unelection campaign. Even on social media, hashtags such as ‘#Abandon Biden’ are being used to spread anti-Biden public opinion.

There are 3.45 million Arab Americans, or about 1% of the total U.S. population. In the 2020 presidential election, approximately 59% of Muslim voters have a strong tendency to support the ruling Democratic Party, supporting President Biden. In particular, the fact that the areas where they are actively campaigning to defeat Biden are major battleground states such as Michigan, Minnesota, and Arizona adds to the concerns of the Biden re-election camp.

Even within the Washington Post (WP), a leading daily newspaper that publicly supported candidate Biden in the presidential election four years ago, there were voices criticizing his re-election bid. In a column on the 29th of the same month, famous columnist Mark Sisun criticized, “Not only did the re-election challenge make a Biden-Trump rematch, which most Americans do not want, likely, but it also increased the possibility of Trump coming back to power.”

The opposition Republican Party is also taking issue with the fact that President Biden spent vacation with his family in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a famous resort in the Caribbean, from the 26th of last month to the 2nd of this month. Even though illegal immigrants from Central and South America are flocking to the United States, they are not responding properly. Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan criticized in a statement on the 30th of last month, “The southern border is in crisis, but the president is vacationing in the Virgin Islands.”

It is pointed out that the fact that Russia recently launched the largest airstrike since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties, also shows the Biden administration’s foreign policy failure.
