CES 2024 Automotive News: Focus on Electrification, Real-world Technology, and New Honda EV

CES, perhaps the premier conference for new technology, has become the premier conference for automotive industry news. The 2024 version of the conference will prove that the trend continues. As TechCrunch notes, “a big part of CES’ growth in recent years has been its position as a premier auto show,” as automakers have focused on tech features.

This mega event in Vegas is scheduled to take place on January 9-12. What automotive news can you expect this year? Well, first of all things will increasingly move towards electric cars. Let’s discuss it.

1. Electrification is not automation

The market has been tough for autonomous vehicles while electric cars are growing in popularity. Tech Radar predicts that CES 2024 will focus heavily on electric cars while eschewing automation, especially considering that auto giant Ford announced last year that it would move away from fully autonomous technology. Both Ford and GM experienced major losses in automation technology. Electric car sales, meanwhile, increased from around 3 million in 2020 to more than 10 million in 2023, as noted by Tech Radar. The market has spoken and CES 2024 will likely reflect that fact.

2. Technology you can actually use

Car companies like to announce things that are far in the future. How often do you see, for example, a “concept” car that never becomes a reality? Last year at CES, for example, BMW announced a color-changing concept car but it’s not on the roads yet.

That may not be the case in 2024. In the same article, Jeremy Kaplan of Tech Radar predicts that “There will be a lot of real-world technology on display at CES 2024, real stuff you can actually buy today for your next real car .”

3. Honda has a new electric car coming

Sticking with the theme, Honda is reportedly planning to launch a new electric car at CES. The Japanese auto giant announced that it will introduce “a new global EV series model and several key technologies that illustrate the significant transformation Honda is undertaking.” Details are still scant, but it’s safe to assume that the announcement on Tuesday, January 9th will be a big one.

4. Concept cars… yes, they still exist

Listen… You may be getting more technology that you can actually use, but automakers still love making concept vehicles. We’ve already gotten a glimpse of one of them. Hyundai has revealed a preview of their Mobion concept car, which allows all wheels to turn independently and will be introduced at CES 2024.

5. Not too much Artificial Intelligence (AI)

While CES 2024 may have a focus on AI as a whole, the automotive industry may be the exception to the rule. After all, you can’t take risks with unreliable technology – like AI – in something as dangerous as a car. Don’t expect AI-powered vehicles now. “Experts predict companies will showcase automotive AI in lower-risk applications such as vehicle personalization,” wrote Automotive News.
