Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who has ruled for 52 years, surprisingly announces her abdication. She did it live on television in a New Year’s address, writes the BBC.
She will abdicate on January 14, 52 years since she was elected queen.
Her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, will take over as king after Margrethe steps down.
The 83-year-old queen is the longest-serving monarch in Denmark’s history, taking the throne after the death of her father, King Frederik IX, in 1952.
