The Russian-Ukrainian conflict and Israel’s statehood at the center of international attention

February 24 of this year marked one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This year, Russia has repeatedly carried out severe attacks on the people of Ukraine. Trying to delay the Ukrainian counterattack, the Russian occupiers blew up Kahovkas HEScausing the last years’ ecological disaster in Europe, which brought great devastation to the victims.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive was expected by many in the spring, hoping that it would bring changes on the front and liberate more Ukrainian territory. Unfortunately, the counterattack did not bring a big breakthrough on the front, as the Russians had time to prepare and create defensive lines where the Ukrainian forces had difficulty moving forward.

In June, we followed the revolt of Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the leader of the mercenary group “Wagner”, when he announced that he was going to overthrow the Russian military leadership by force. It was not long before the riot was put down. At the end of August, however, Prigozhin died in a plane crash.

On May 31, the Saeima elected the candidate of “Jaunās Vienotības” and long-time foreign minister Edgars Rinkēvičas as the new President of Latvia. Former President Egils Levits canceled his candidacy at the last moment. Until the elections, the parties nominated three candidates – “Jaunā Vienotība” Edgars Rinkēvičs, “Apiventais Sarksts” Uldi Pīlēnas, while “Progressives” Elīnas Pinto.

The presidential elections also introduced processes of change in the composition of the government. Shortly after the election of Rinkēvičas to the post of president, former Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš announced that he would start negotiations on the expansion of the coalition. All this resulted in a new composition of the government.

Historic decision: the Saeima ratifies the Istanbul Convention

On November 30, the majority of the Saeima adopted the law in its final reading ratifying the so-called Istanbul Convention or the Council of Europe Convention on the prevention and combating of violence against women and domestic violence. The adoption of the law was supported only by coalition factions, with the opposition largely absent from the vote.

It should be noted that several tragic events took place this year, which shed light on the problems of violence in society – the responsibility of the responsible authorities and fellow human beings.

In April, a woman born in 1983 was killed in front of her child and mother in Jēkabpils region. The murder was committed by her ex-husband Leon Rusiņš, who threatened and harassed the woman for months, this was regularly reported to the police, but the woman was not protected.

The police have so far failed to arrest Rusina after the murder, but at the same time, it has not been ruled out that he committed suicide. Rusin is also included On the list of the most wanted criminals in Europe.
