Nearly 8.2 million people moved from one state to another in 2022, according to data from the US Census Bureau, data that continues to show an increase in this trend that began in the year the coronavirus pandemic broke out.
The previous year, 2021, there were 7.9 million, showing an increase in the number of people moving, a sign that migration between states continues to increase.
In addition, the Census Bureau calculated which states (between moves and births) have increased the number of inhabitants, and which states have lost population. These are some of the most interesting data on population changes in the US:
California to Texas / New York to Florida
Some of the largest migration flows from one state to another involve highly populated states: many people are leaving California for Texas and from New York for Florida.
Other large migratory flows are between neighboring states. For example, many people moved from New York to New Jersey or from Florida to Georgia.

Some 545,000 people left New York in 2022, according to the Census Bureau, making it one of the most populous states in the country that has also lost the most inhabitants in 2023.
This massive emigration movement from that state is linked to the high costs of living it has. As the pandemic created many remote work options, thousands choose to leave that state and settle in other places with more accessible housing.
Many New Yorkers stayed close to home, moving to neighboring or nearby states such as New Jersey (75,103), Connecticut (50,670) or Pennsylvania (44,807). But many (many) chose to move to the sunny state of Florida (91,201), where New Yorkers are looking for a better quality of life, with a friendlier climate all year round, and where much more affordable housing can be found than in the Big Apple (and also close to the beach).
Moving: which states had the most immigrants from other states?
The Census Bureau indicated that in 2022, Florida, with 318,855 moves, has been the state that attracted the most people, followed by Texas, with 230,961.
Florida was the fastest-growing state in 2022, with an annual population increase of 1.9%, reaffirming a trend that had begun during the pandemic in 2020.
On the other hand, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) indicates that most of the areas that experienced the greatest influx of people, located in Florida, Texas and part of the Carolinas, are areas that, in addition to being located in the region of the Sun Belt (the Sun Belt, as this area in the south of the country is known), had a solid recovery in the post-pandemic labor market.
“Compared to the pre-pandemic situation, the Miami metropolitan area experienced the largest incoming population gains in the entire country. Incoming movements increased almost 60% in 2022 compared to 2019 in this area,” indicates NAR.
And which states had the most emigrants?
Once again, California and New York lead the trend of population loss. Both, in large part, due to their high costs of living.
In 2022, 343,230 left California and 299,557 left New York and 141,656 from Illinois, according to the Census Bureau.
Meanwhile, the 2023 estimate shows eight states saw their populations decline, and again, the Empire State tops the list: New York (-101,984); California (-75,423); Illinois (-32,826); Louisiana (-14,274); Pennsylvania (-10,408); Oregon (-6,021); Hawaii (-4,261) and West Virginia (-3,964).
Big city centers like New York, San Francisco and Chicago continue to lose population, even as more people are returning to those areas as employers have reestablished hybrid or in-person office arrangements. Even so, emigrations from those urban areas still exceed entries, according to NAR.
US population estimates for 2023
The country’s population increased by more than 1.6 million people in the last year, a growth of 0.5%. The US now has 334,914,895 inhabitants, according to the Census. Although births decreased, the number of deaths also decreased substantially, 9%, which had increased due to the coronavirus.
Population growth in the South accounted for 87% of the 2023 population growth, as that region had more than 1.4 million additional residents. The South is “the only region that maintained population growth throughout the pandemic,” indicates the Census, which attributes the phenomenon largely to internal migration patterns to the region, which totaled 706,266 people.
Texas had the largest change in the country in 2023, adding 473,453 people, followed by Florida, with 365,205 additional residents. South Carolina and Florida were the two fastest-growing states in the country in 2023, increasing 1.7% and 1.6% respectively.
