In an era before speed sensors and automatic cameras, Soviet traffic police used other methods to detain careless drivers. Lacking today’s high-tech tools, these officers relied on cunning and resourcefulness to enforce speed limits.
One of the common methods used by traffic police officers was the art of “falling on your tail.” Having noticed a vehicle flagrantly violating traffic rules, patrol police officers quietly followed it at a distance, noting the speed on the speedometer of their own car. If the speed exceeded the permissible limit, the police would quickly catch up and detain the offender (photo: ru.freepik.com).
More advanced officers used the stopwatch technique. By measuring the time required for a vehicle to pass a certain section of the road, traffic cops could calculate the speed of the car. Some officers even carried tables that allowed them to quickly convert seconds to kilometers per hour. This method demonstrated a combination of ingenuity and precision in enforcing speed limits.
Working together was not uncommon among traffic police crews. They were strategically located at the beginning and end of fixed sections of road. Passing the first checkpoint, the driver often accelerated without fear of meeting the second one. However, police coordinated by radio, measuring the time taken by the driver and calculating the average speed. This method is similar to modern monitoring cameras.
