Volkswagen Multivan: A Practical Review for Families and Long-Distance Travelers

Before the fans of battery electric cars once again put me on the pillory and start at me as an impossible dinosaur rejecting the modern world, let’s take a look at the typical customer who drives a Volkswagen Multivan. Because let’s face it – the Multivan stands out among its rivals because it drives “almost like” a passenger car, but it is a van after all – and that entails certain compromises. Compromises that you probably wouldn’t make if you didn’t get something in return – in this case variability and a giant interior space.

A typical Multivan owner either has a large family, large dogs, a number of space-consuming hobbies or a job that often requires them to transport a lot of bulky cargo. They also typically drive relatively long routes – and this is where the stumbling block comes in. Electric cars are nice, but for a person who often (several times a week) drives hundreds of kilometers, they won’t be suitable for the time being. By the way, I also agree with a large part of reasonable electric motorists, only fanatical supporters can blindly claim that daily charging at public stands by the highway is a problem-free and basically pleasant and fun thing.

It isn’t and it won’t be like that, but fortunately it only takes a few minutes to fill up a full tank of diesel, and the Multivan with the proven two-liter TDI engine has a mileage of at least 700 km. The engine is a bit audible inside, its bass soundtrack turning into a typical rumble in the flat-sided van’s large space – although it should be added that this only happens under more forceful acceleration, and compared to similar rivals it’s actually very distant and practically audible . You’re barely aware of the engine when it’s running smoothly, the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission is smooth, the engine is flexible enough to keep up with faster traffic, and the car’s handling is also better than you’d expect for its class.

But the best part of the Multivan is its versatility. It can be a van with an internal volume of almost four cubic meters or it can be used as a school minibus, or even preschoolers, because all five rear seats have isofix mounts. The center console can be moved back and turned into a practical table, thanks to the use of the MQB platform you can rely on the most modern driving assistants, the view from the steering wheel is great…

In short and well, I’ve been driving this car very well for a long time and the seventh generation hasn’t changed that at all. If I found any negatives? But of course, you have to watch the video anyway…
