At the beginning of next year, they will be able to cross the bridge between Paks and Kalocsa on foot

The completion of a 70-kilometer detour will become unnecessary with the handover of the new bridge being built between Paks and Kalocsa, which will be completed by the general contractor Duna Aszfalt Zrt. on behalf of the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM). We regularly report on the project, now in connection with the fact that the two sections of the mederhíd, which were built separately until now, have joined on the Kalocsa side.

Two floodplain bridges and a riverbed bridge between them

The nearly 1-kilometer long bridge, built on the southern Hungarian section of the Danube – 946 meters long, to be exact – actually consists of three separate parts, two wave-field bridges and the riverbed bridge built between them, forming one large unit. The floodplain bridges already touch the two sides of the riverbed bridge, but the latter still consisted of three parts at the beginning of December.

The construction of the 440-meter-long riverbed bridge reached a spectacular moment on December 6: thanks to the work of the specialists, the coastal section of the Kalocsa was finally connected. We are now announcing an on-site gallery of the last stage of this work – and the project management of Duna Aszfalt informed us about the details.

This is how they got into the work area

On December 5, the contractors concreted the track plate of the KP19 Kalocsa coastal barrier (ie structural unit – the editor). Thanks to this, on December 6, from the Kalocsa side, from the bridge head number 1, through the left floodplain bridge structure, it was possible to walk all the way to the middle of the Danube bed.

A significant part of the works shown in the photos were taken from the inside of the bridge: you can see the tensioning of the bottom plate and track plate following the closure of the Kalocsa shore.

During our on-site visit, the snow fell, but thanks to the appropriate technological preparations, this did not represent an insurmountable obstacle for the contractors, the work continued without interruption with the raising and welding of the right bank closing steel brace.

The right bank was also closed

Despite the harsh weather and the flooding Danube, the preparation for the coastal closure of the Paks river bridge branch went smoothly, so the bottom and track plate were concreted on December 18, 2023, according to the preliminary plans.

The experts have also prepared the closure of the middle riverbed, which is expected to be realized in February 2024. The first stage of this bed closure will be the raising and welding of the MM20 steel bracing support parts, and then the concreting of the bottom plate and track plate will complete this work process, which will make it possible to cross the entire bridge from one bank of the Danube to the other.

In recent weeks, significant works have also taken place on the right bank: on the right floodplain bridge, the construction of the cast asphalt protecting the insulation has been completed, and the track insulation works have been completed on the frame structure marked B3.
