Roberto Alagna Supports Gérard Depardieu in Tribune: Full Statement Revealed

In a message posted on his Facebook account on December 30, Roberto Alagna joined the list of artistic personalities who signed the column favorable to Gérard Depardieu who expressed their discomfort or their regrets once the author of this column was revealed (see our article Roberto Alagna joins a call not to “erase” Gérard Depardieu).

In his communication which we reproduce in full, the tenor explains in what circumstances he was led to give his agreement in principle to a forum whose text he had not read. He reaffirms his opposition to all forms of violence and aggression, and his pain for those who suffer unjustly:

“Have I been tricked? I was in New York when I was contacted about a petition denouncing the media lynching of a man, the censorship and the total erasure of an artist, his history and his work. The request was urgent, this petition had to be published quickly within the next few hours. On the basis of this presentation alone, I agreed to be in solidarity, without even having read the writing.

Suspicious, I called Julie Depardieu to ask her what was going on. She immediately reassured me by telling me that the column would certainly not be published. I made the mistake of not caring anymore.

I have always been against all forms of violence and aggression, from anyone and towards anyone. I also force myself to never pass judgment on my neighbor. I have confidence in justice which alone must judge. I am always deeply saddened for those who are in turmoil, distress, pain and suffering unjustly.

I hope that this new year finally brings justice, appeasement and serenity to all.
