US Destroyer Intercepted Missiles Fired at Singapore-Flagged Maersk Hangzhou in Red Sea

The container ship Hangzhou of the Danish company Maersk under the flag of Singapore came under fire in the southern part of the Red Sea. The Pentagon Central Command (CENTCOM) announced this on December 31 on its page on the social network X.

“Today at approximately 20.30 (Sanaa time, coincides with Moscow time), the container ship Maersk Hangzhou reported that it was hit by a missile while sailing through the southern part of the Red Sea. A Singapore-flagged container ship owned/operated by Denmark requested assistance and USS Gravely and USS Laboon responded to the vessel,” the statement said.

The container ship itself was not damaged and remained in seaworthy condition, with no injuries reported.

It is noted that in response to a request for assistance, the American destroyer Gravely shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in the direction of the ships.

This is the 23rd unlawful Houthi attack on international shipping since November 19, according to CENTCOM.

On December 29, CENTCOM reported that a US destroyer intercepted a drone and an anti-ship missile off the coast of Yemen. They also clarified that no damage was caused to any of the 18 ships in the area.

Prior to this, on December 27, an explosion incident 60 nautical miles from the Yemeni port of Hodeidah was reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) of the British Navy.

As the conflict in the Middle East escalates, Yemen’s Houthis have begun attacking ships in the Red Sea that they say are affiliated with Israel.
