An extremely poisonous snake has forced a stoppage of a qualifying match for the Brisbane ATP tournament. The animal had crawled under the barrier around the track. The match was paused for 40 minutes to remove the hose.
The eastern brown snake is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. A bite can be fatal. A professional snake exterminator was called in to safely remove the animal.
After removing the 50 centimeter long reptile, the match was completed. Thiem, who had lost the first set, managed to turn the match in his favor after the incident.
The world number 98 won in three sets and said afterwards that he had never experienced anything like it. “I will certainly never forget this. I really love animals, especially exotic ones, but they said that snake was very poisonous and came close to the ball boys, so it was a very dangerous situation,” said the Austrian tennis player.
