Putin Omits Western Leaders in Christmas and New Year’s Greetings

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated some world leaders on Christmas and the New Year, omitting to send congratulatory addresses to Western leaders. From Europe, he congratulated only Viktor Orban and Aleksandar Vucic. This was reported by Russian media, quoted by “Trud”.

Traditionally, the leaders of the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States of the CIS (with the exception of Moldova and Ukraine) and the leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are among those congratulated. Putin noted the high level of interaction and cooperation between Russia and these countries, the importance of cooperation and strengthening ties. The President of the Russian Federation paid special attention to the importance of integration in the Eurasian space.

Putin also greeted the leaders of China, India, Vietnam and Laos, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, Syria, Turkey and South Africa, according to the published list. There are no Western leaders on the list, from among his European colleagues, the Russian president sent congratulations only to the president of Serbia and the prime minister of Hungary.

Putin has also greeted Pope Francis and several former foreign heads of state and government, including former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
