Body Repatriation Insurance Policy for Cameroonians in Belgium

Belgium-Cameroon: “Thinking About a Body Repatriation Insurance Policy” :: Belgium

He is an economic operator and member of the Cameroonians of Brussels association. Far from Cameroon, his country of origin, he urges Cameroonian men, women and children in particular and Africans in general living abroad to take out a so-called “repatriation” insurance policy in the event of death near a company of the kingdom. To find out more about his association and the purpose of this insurance policy, Prosper Yamen, since it is about him, spoke to Camer.be

Can you introduce yourself and your association to our readers?

My name is Prosper Yamen, secretary general of the association of Cameroonians in Brussels. The Cameroonians of Brussels association is an association under Belgian law. The only hybrid association which brings together Cameroonians of all stripes, English-speaking and French-speaking. We have the advantage of bringing on board Cameroonian university professors, executives and at the same time average Cameroonians or resourceful people if you like. Another advantage we have is that we are apolitical.

A little word about your goals?

As a platform for Cameroonian associations, our main objectives are to help Cameroonians integrate academically, economically and culturally.

How do you go about meeting your goals?

We provide facilitation opportunities for Cameroonians who would like to integrate here in Belgium on a professional and academic level. The same goes for those who want to invest in Cameroon. We put in place elements that allow everyone to integrate, elements of advice and guidance useful to their environment. We also set up, a little over three years ago, what we call the body repatriation insurance policy in the event of death.

Speaking of this body repatriation insurance policy, can you tell us what it consists of?

It’s very simple, as I already wanted to say, we contacted a local insurance company for so-called body repatriation insurance contracts in the event of the death of one of ours. This insurance taken out with a local insurance company allows its beneficiary client in order to benefit from a capital estimated at €7,500 for the transport of his body in the event of death in Cameroon. This insurance policy costs only €50 per year per person. Initially, there were around thirty of us and to date, with several associations who have agreed to join us, we have around a hundred members. Taking out a repatriation insurance policy in the event of death is always commendable.

What motivated the association of Cameroonians in Brussels to use such insurance?

The motivations are many and varied. We have noticed that when a compatriot dies here in Belgium, we have a lot of worries about ensuring that the deceased person is repatriated to Cameroon. Our association has therefore thought for more than three years already that instead of going door to door to collect sums of money necessary for the repatriation of the body, for example of a deceased member, it is rather desirable that alongside support that the association can provide, that each person feels responsible and provided that they are in the conditions to take out this insurance.

What are the conditions to be met to subscribe to this insurance policy?

The first condition is to be in residence order and then pay the contribution which is around €50 per person. The amount also changes depending on the age of the subscriber.

Does this mean that people in an irregular administrative situation cannot subscribe to this insurance?

For those who are not in residence order in Belgium, we have set up another form of assistance for these categories of people. Technically, the person who benefits from the insurance premium contributes in one way or another for a member in an irregular stay situation. We call this internal support.
