Russian Publicist Maxim Sokolov Dies at 64 Years Old

Russian publicist Maxim Sokolov has died. About it reported in his VKontakte account is Sokolov’s wife. According to her, he died suddenly, the cause of death is being determined.

Sokolov was 64 years old. After founding the Kommersant newspaper in 1989, he worked as a correspondent for this publication. In the 1990s he collaborated with Radio Liberty. For many years he was a columnist for Expert magazine and subsequently published in Izvestia. In the 2010s, he was published in such publications as RIA Novosti, Komsomolskaya Pravda and on RT. A distinctive sign of his style were numerous Latin sayings and quotations from the works of Russian classics.

In 2001-2003, he was one of the presenters of the “However” program on Channel One of Russian television, and also worked on VGTRK (TV channel “Russia-24”).

At the beginning of his journalistic career, he supported President Boris Yeltsin and his reforms, and spoke of his views as “bourgeois-liberal.” Subsequently, he positioned himself as a conservative and supported Vladimir Putin. He came out in support of the war against Ukraine in one of his last publications said about the need to “force Ukraine to capitulate.”
