Coca-Cola’s Iconic Christmas Ad: The Clever Illusion Behind the Cult Video

The creators of the video used a clever illusion.

The symbol of the winter holiday was the image of a line of red heavy trucks transporting a popular carbonated drink. The Coca-Cola advertisement turned out to be a standard Christmas and New Year’s video, turning into a cult video. But the creators had no idea that their project would gain such popularity.

The advertisement was first published at the end of 1995. The American agency developed a rough picture of a row of Coca-Cola trucks shimmering in the dark driving along a snowy road. Marketers stated that they wanted to create a video that supported the Christmas spirit and optimism.

The New Year’s caravan on the screens literally captivated the audience. In many ways, this effect was achieved thanks to the company that worked on the filming of Star Wars – its specialists were responsible for the lighting. To create the video, only three trucks were used, each of which was hung with 30 thousand light bulbs.

Thanks to computer graphics, these several trucks turned into an endless line. Filming took place in Vancouver, where a creative team of 40 people specially went there. The ad was shown on screen only once, and it became a good Christmas tradition that is still followed today.
