- sorae – Celebrating 20 years since the Hubble Space Telescope’s camera “ACS” was installed
This was introduced by sorae in an article on March 10, 2022.Variable star “V838 Monoceros”“is.
V838 Monocerotis, a variable star located approximately 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Monoceros, was observed to temporarily brighten in 2002. However, the cause of the brightness still remains unclear.
Some of the light emitted by star V838 reaches the Earth directly, while other light reaches the Earth after being reflected by the dust surrounding the star. The intense light emitted from the star during brightening traveled outward, illuminating the dust surrounding the star. This phenomenon has been observed as a “light echo” by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Repeated observations by Hubble have captured the appearance of “echoes of light” that change over time, as if scanning a shell of dust surrounding star V838 from the inside out. This image taken by the Advanced Survey Camera (ACS) shows the “echoes of light” as of February 2004.
The video below is a morph of 8 images of star V838. Also, the angle at the beginning is different from the introduction image.
