Nissan X-Trail 2024 Review: Award-Winning SUV Test Drive and Forum Feedback

Shortly before Christmas, the iAuto portal gave its readers and the most active forum participants the opportunity to try the Nissan X-Trail, which has just won the title of Latvian Car of the Year 2024.

The car also won the “Latvian Car of the Year 2024 Innovation” and “4×4 SUV 2024” nominations.

iAuto.lv is not only the oldest forum for car enthusiasts, but also one of the rare forums in Latvia that is active. Therefore, it was there that the iAuto forum event “Nissan X-Trail 4×4 test drive” was announced.

We meet in the very center of Riga at Avalon Hotel & Conferences, where before the test drive we have lunch and drive to test the new Nissan X-Trail under special conditions.

The X-Trail is the largest SUV model available in Europe from the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan, and this is already the fourth generation of the car. Compared to its predecessor, the external dimensions of the car have not changed significantly. However, the new X-Trail is offered only in various hybrid versions, thus the interior capacity of the car has become smaller. However, in practice, you only have to complain about the lack of space if three full-sized passengers have to spend a longer journey next to each other in the second row seat. X-Trail is also available in a version with 7 seats.

All versions of the X-Trail are equipped with a three-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine, but each of them differs in the type of wheel drive. The MHEV Xtronic version of the X-Trail has front-wheel drive, where the aforementioned gasoline engine drives the wheels through an automatic transmission. On the other hand, in the other versions, the drive is performed by electric motors – in the case of e-POWER, one electric motor provides the front drive, and in the e-4ORCE version, 2 electric motors provide the all-wheel drive. In these versions, the gasoline engine serves only to generate power and charge the batteries.

The car available for the iAuto test drive was the e-4ORCE version in the most complete Tekna package. Such a car costs from EUR 48,330.

The test drive organized by iAuto started from the Avalon Hotel and ended in the sandy area of ​​the Bolderāja quarry. Thus, giving the opportunity to drive the car both in city, off-road and highway conditions. The event was attended by iAuto forum members darklight, ZZZZ and Konuss.

There is a saying: “What works for everything, works for nothing.” Well, Nissan has worked hard to prove that it is not true, and with one shot it has killed several rabbits at once. In addition, surprisingly successful! Nothing in the cabin shows that you are sitting in a local – everything is neat, tasteful, comfortable, soft leather upholstery. Feels like a solid middle-class sedan. Next, the power and thrust makes all the hot hatchbacks nervously pipe. If the manufacturer promises 7 seconds to a hundred, then we (four adult men sitting inside) managed it in 7.5 seconds in standard mode. Considerable! Then the last thing – the comments of the forum showed doubts about the capabilities of this car on more extreme roads.

Today’s test showed that everything is fine there. Go through the mud like a tractor by choosing the right driving mode. During the tests, I didn’t even have to use the shovel I brought with me. No, we didn’t drive in a complete swamp and through ditches either, that car is not meant for that, but on forest roads and proper mud puddles. In the spring, the Latvian gravel roads, which become an impossible mission for many cars, will not be an obstacle for this!

This time there was an opportunity to test this e-4orce in heavy city traffic. The E pedal function worked well. Adequately reduces driving speed and gives energy to be used when starting movement. The sensations are very similar to the characteristics of driving and driving an electric car. If necessary, they are sufficiently dynamic and calm at the same time. This is thanks to the electric transmission. It is the electric engine that turns the wheels, the internal combustion engine only turns the generator. I really want to try this feature of the transmission on a worse road.

Yes, the corresponding tire profile is suitable for good road surface this time. To whom it is understandable, such a combination of cars is positioned as a 4force all-wheel drive transmission. A good ride on a good surface, but bad roads still make the ride uncomfortable. However, the steering is quite accurate and the car understandably holds its own even on the icy back of the forest path. What pleases. In my understanding, this is also the environment for which such a car is intended. It’s good to get closer to nature, after a Christmas tree or a ski slope, to feel the peace by the shore of the lake. Yes, it is quite quiet in nature, even in the conspiratorial landfill, if you press the accelerator pedal properly, the sound is almost like the noise made by puddles. Then the quad entertainments there will disturb others more with their roar. But it’s a big surprise that this, not a small car, was able to cross the track created by quadriists. Yes, it was narrow and with steep hills and steep valleys. Constructive X-trail well formed approach/descent angles.

It must be understood that this is only a so-called parquet rider, but wet sand is enough resistance to understand how algorithms work at full speed. And yes, they are electronically controlled so as not to remain on a sensible off-road, on a dark evening, where I don’t even know if such a classic tow truck would enter. Would you recommend this car to someone else? Hard question. Riders and requirements are different. A car for a more practical driver who is not so demanding of comfort. It is especially good if you are the head of a department or company.

It seems that the new X-Trail has significantly raised the brand’s bar of comfort, finishing quality and technology to a much higher level. If before X-Trail was a robust car that would be recommended if daily routes have to be done on relatively bad roads and off-road conditions, then in the new generation the car will most likely be seen in city traffic. Subjectively, it seems that there are more new X-Trails than Qashqai on the streets. But there is nothing to be surprised about, because the new X-Trail proves itself to be a very versatile family car. In the tested version, the car drives just like an electric car, the pedal response is lightning fast, the ride is quiet and dynamic.

X-Trail absorbs most of the bumps in the road perfectly, but really sharp bumps are unpleasantly felt in the cabin. Even with its modest size, the X-Trail is easy to maneuver in the city, large side mirrors provide good visibility to the rear as well. The front struts are at the right angle and thickness so as not to create too much of a blind spot in the forward direction.

The front and rear seats provide good comfort even for longer journeys. However, this car surprised the most off-road. I already observed its capabilities in the test of the Latvian Car of the Year competition, where it passed without any doubt where the big pickups were. The car also felt like a fish in water in Bolderāja sand. However, it should be noted that there is a lack of higher ground clearance for overcoming more serious off-road conditions. In the case of the X-Trail, it is 19.5 cm. The test car was shod with Central European winter tires, but with all that, there was no need for a shovel or a tractor. X-Trail can choose various driving modes, including off-road, but the anti-lock braking system cannot be disabled. Therefore, when crossing such sand hills, you should avoid pressing the accelerator quickly, because then the system will drop power. On the other hand, with moderate dosage of power, the car gets through without any hesitation. Overall, an interesting and balanced car with many talents. But you will have to pay quite a lot for all this.
