New Year’s Eve Security: 600 Police Officers and 350 Firefighters Mobilized in Rhône

Emergency services will also be heavily mobilized, with 350 firefighters who will be ready to intervene.

A New Year’s Eve under close surveillance. In the Rhône, 600 police officers and gendarmes will be mobilized for New Year’s Eve in order to carry out “checks, to guarantee peace, public tranquility, to intervene if necessary”, explains this Friday, December 29 at the microphone of BFM Lyon the delegated prefect for defense and security, Juliette Brossart Trignat.

If the State services have “no particular fears” for this New Year’s Eve, they still wish to put in place “collective vigilance”, in order to avoid possible disturbances to public order.

In addition to the police forces mobilized, 350 firefighters will also be on alert throughout the evening.

Controls on fireworks

Two days before New Year’s Eve, the security system is already well in place in the Rhône. This Friday, around ten customs officers were already deployed at the Villefranche-Limas toll station.

They checked the vehicles for fireworks, the transport and possession of which are prohibited by a prefectural decree.

“These fireworks, such as mortars, Roman candles, rockets, are dangerous objects. They can injure their users. Every year, we have examples of very serious injuries with after-effects. They can also cause fires and accidents,” explains Juliette. Brossart Trignat.

The prefect responsible for security also wants to prevent the “diverted” use of fireworks, “as weapons by destination against the police or firefighters in particular”.

The checks which began this Friday, December 29 must still continue until New Year’s Eve.
