  • The Russian Black Sea Fleet’s 810th Marine Infantry Brigade reported on Telegram that they had started dropping CS gas against Ukrainian forces.
  • They later removed this information, according to ISW (Institute for the Study of War).
  • CNN has previously reported the same – and interviewed Ukrainian soldiers who claim that they have been exposed to tear gas.

– They edited this out – probably in an attempt to hide what could be a deliberate violation of the convention on the use of chemical weapons, writes ISW.

In the original version, of which a screenshot was taken, it is stated that the brigade had adopted a “radical change in tactics” against Ukrainian soldiers in Krynky in the Kherson region of Ukraine.

They had started dropping K-51 grenades at Ukrainian positions. According to ISW, K-51 aerosol grenades are filled with irritant CS gas.

It is a type of tear gas commonly used by police to fight riots. But in war it is forbidden according to the Convention on the Use of Chemical Weapons. The United States was criticized in its time for use of tear gas in the Vietnam War.

  • On Friday, Russia carried out what experts call the biggest attack in Ukraine since the start of the war. Read more about it here.

Last week, CNN quoted a Ukrainian intelligence officer as saying that the Russians are using CS gas against Ukrainian soldiers.

– CS causes severe irritation in the eyes and on the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth/pharynx and upper respiratory tract, as well as on the skin. The irritation effect occurs immediately. Most symptoms are gone after 15-30 minutes after the end of exposure, it says helsebiblioteket.no.

The short impact may be enough: A Ukrainian soldier tells CNN that they had to run out of their hiding place in the trench after being attacked with the gas.

Up from the trenches, the soldiers are no longer protected in the same way.

– There have been nine cases of such attacks in recent weeks, it says.

– The gas is used to create panic and is followed by conventional artillery attacks or drone attacks, the soldiers tell CNN.
