Waldviertel issue – Waldviertler Heimatbund presents a new issue

The new issue of the series “Das Waldviertel” focuses on an editorial about Horn in the pre-modern period. Thomas Winkelbauer offers an overview of the history of the city of Horn in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. At this time, Horn was a small agricultural town. Almost all citizens farmed and sometimes produced the food they needed for their household themselves. From the late 16th century onwards, the guilds also began producing commercial products and trade was carried out to varying degrees.

Issue 4/2023 of the series “Das Waldviertel” is available for 8 euros.

Nicolas Neumeister outlines the development of the economic and social benefits of the Franz Josef Railway since 1995. The article is a short version of his pre-scientific work, with which he received the “Waldviertel Prize 2022” from the Waldviertler Heimatbund (WHB). The railway line was reduced from a former international main line to a route of almost exclusively regional importance. This happened despite the increasing improvements in the timetable and the increasing freight traffic.

Devil’s Church and nativity scene other topics

Rudolf S. Zappe deals with the so-called Devil’s Church in Wetzlas. He presents this remarkable and legendary garden pavilion and combines this with an urgent appeal to renovate this object, which has been neglected for decades – while this is still possible.

In his contribution to late Baroque painting in the Cistercian monastery of Zwettl, Andreas Gamerith presents Joseph Schitz’s nativity scene. This was restored in 2014 and represents an almost completely preserved baroque nativity scene. Overall, according to the author, this nativity scene has retained a picturesque appeal and charm.

Friedrich Polleroß gives a review and overview of the events in the “First Austrian Museum for Everyday History”. In addition to the exhibition “Biegler & Robitschek. Jewish Family Stories” there were also events about the upheaval in all areas of life in the post-war period. Symbolically, a picture shows the last horse on the farm in Neupölla around 1975.

Markus Holzweber congratulates the prehistoric and local historian Hermann Maurer on his 75th birthday, Anton Distelberger congratulates the publisher and publishing director of the provincial library, Richard Pils, on his 77th birthday. Cultural reports from the Waldviertel, book reviews and WHB communications round off the 112-page booklet.

The 72nd year of the magazine “Das Waldviertel” comprises four issues with a total of 496 pages. An issue of the magazine “Das Waldviertel” costs 8 euros. A purchase is available via the website www.daswaldviertel.at possible.
