While the humanitarian situation in Sudan has reached a catastrophic state, in light of the expanding war between the army and the Rapid Support, there does not seem to be a prospective horizon for reaching a solution that will save the country from the clutches of catastrophic failure, from which it may not recover from for decades to come, despite many initiatives. The latest of which is IGAD sending official invitations to the leaders of both sides of the conflict to hold a direct meeting between them, to stop the bloody war that has destroyed everything.
These calls are awaiting the approval of both parties until now, with the entry of new areas into the conflict, such as the state of Al-Jazira, in addition to the clashes that did not stop with heavy weapons in the rest of the areas, which resulted in disasters that struck the population with endless tragedies, as millions of people were displaced and sought refuge internally and externally, amidst a state of hunger. The extreme. According to the United Nations, more than 17 million people suffer from severe food insecurity, in addition to thousands of civilian casualties.
IGAD’s call comes after persistent attempts by several parties to bring the two parties together in a consensual formula that will stop the ongoing bleeding. It seems that there is acceptance of the organization’s step in principle, with some conditions by each party. However, the mere meeting is a new opportunity whose outcomes could be fruitful. Towards a civilian government, preventing the militarization of the country, and finding solutions for the future of rapid support in the army or security services; So that there is no exclusion of any party, all the way to a civilian government.
For this to be achieved, there must be seriousness towards the actual solution, not to buy time. To impose new facts that improve conditions, especially since time is blood, and there is no time in light of the current circumstances that threaten the country with total destruction, with death spreading on every side, and fueling conflicts that were dormant, which in turn may threaten the country with an irreversible division, as a result of… Separate territories.
Sudan is going through a very delicate stage, with pivotal moments. Either the war will continue, and the country will turn into cantons, each side attacking the other, for the sake of personal, partisan, or regional interests, or all of this will be transcended, and serious negotiations will begin that will put the state back on its correct path. With a capable government that manages the affairs of the people and the country, addresses the crises left by the war, begins construction that takes years, and does not waste opportunities; Because it may not be returned except under worse and more severe circumstances, and then time may have run out on many things that there was an opportunity to fix.
