According to Toshima Village and the Jukan Headquarters, the Ferry Toshima 2 was sailing off the coast of Akuseki Island from Naze Port on Amami Oshima to Kagoshima Port via the islands of Toshima Village at around 6:30 a.m. on the 29th. A fire broke out in the engine room.

Of the 29 people, 18 crew members and 11 passengers, seven crew members remained on board, and the remaining 22 people evacuated to Akusekijima on a nearby fishing boat. No one was injured.

According to the Jukan Headquarters, the engine room where the engine is located was sealed to extinguish the fire, but a special rescue team from the Sankaku Headquarters opened the engine room and confirmed that the fire was extinguished just after 7 p.m.

Currently, the ferry is unable to navigate on its own, and is scheduled to be towed to Kagoshima Port from early tomorrow morning. Until then, the patrol boat “Amagi” will be on guard duty in the area.
