Turkish Super Cup Final Postponed in Riyadh: Dispute Over Ataturk Shirts Leads to Cancellation

The Turkish clubs Galatasaray and Fenerbahce announced the postponement of the Turkish Super Cup final, which was scheduled to be held in Riyadh today, Friday, due to “some problems” in organizing the match, after reports of its cancellation.

The announcement came in a joint statement issued by the two clubs and the Turkish Football Federation via the (X) social media platform, formerly known as (Twitter).

The Turkish NTV channel said that the local Super Cup final, which was scheduled to be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce on Friday, was canceled after a dispute between the two clubs and the Saudi authorities.

According to Reuters, the two clubs said that they would not play in the final in Riyadh if the players were not allowed to wear shirts bearing the image of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, during the warm-up before the match.

Turkish media reported that Saudi officials rejected this request, without the reasons being clear. The match coincides with the first centenary of the founding of secular Türkiye.

News reports also said that the organizers would not allow the playing of the national anthem and the raising of the Turkish flag in the final, but the Football Association of Turkey had previously clarified that they would be present.

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) reported that the Turkish Minister of Sports, the President of the Football Association, and the presidents of Fenerbahce and Galatasaray held talks about the situation.
