29 Arrested for Planning New Year’s Eve Attacks on Mosques and Synagogues in Turkey

Istanbul: 29 people have been arrested for planning to attack mosques and synagogues on New Year’s Eve in Turkey, the Interior Ministry said. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that 29 people suspected of having links with the IS group were detained in nine provinces. The accused were arrested during the ‘Operation Heroes 37’ mission conducted by the Turkish security forces ahead of the New Year celebrations.

Xil Yerlikaya, a social media platform, said the arrested suspects were planning to attack mosques and synagogues in Istanbul. According to the report, one of the arrested was planning to attack the Iraqi embassy in Ankara.

In addition to them, Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency reported, citing security sources, that three senior IS members were arrested. The news agency did not provide further details on their activities.

Turkey has stepped up its crackdown on IS and Kurdish activists after a Kurdish fighter detonated a bomb near government buildings in Ankara on October 1.
