He stays in Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti has extended his contract. Why he doesn’t go to Brazil remains unclear for now. They had already announced his move there.

Madrid – Carlo Ancelotti will not be Brazil’s future national coach. The 64-year-old Italian instead extended his contract with Real Madrid. As Spanish football record champions Real Madrid announced, the new working paper has been extended until June 30, 2026.

His previous contract would have expired at the end of this season and he has been coaching the Royals since the summer of 2021. A commitment as head coach of the record world champions Brazil is therefore ruled out again for the time being. A change by Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who was already considered Ancelotti’s successor in Madrid, is also ruled out next summer.

In July, Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian association CBF, told TV Globo that Ancelotti should become the Copa América national coach from summer 2024. In December, however, a court in the state of Rio de Janeiro removed Rodrigues from office. He is accused of irregularities that led to his election last year.

There was never any clear confirmation from Ancelotti about a move to South America. In terms of sport, things aren’t looking good for the Seleção at the moment, the team is only sixth in the group in the World Cup qualification, and superstar Neymar is expected to miss the Copa América next year due to injury.

The verdict against Rodrigues could also result in the Brazilian association being suspended by FIFA, as the world association’s statutes prohibit state bodies from interfering in the affairs of its national member associations. Brazilian teams, officials and referees would then be banned from international games and events. It is unclear whether this is one of the reasons why Ancelotti is not going to Brazil but is staying in Madrid.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not particularly enthusiastic about the former Bayern coach’s possible involvement. “I like Ancelotti, but he was never the coach of Italy. If he wanted to solve Brazil’s problem, why doesn’t he solve Italy’s problem, which didn’t even take part in the last World Cup,” Lula said in an interview with Brazilian news channel SBT News. Instead, Lula appeared to be a fan of Fernando Diniz, who was signed by the association for a year in the summer.

Under Ancelotti in his second spell in Madrid, Real won the Champions League in 2022. His team is currently leading the Spanish league ahead of the surprise team from Girona with the same points. dpa
