Huawei’s Triumph: Record 9% Increase in Turnover in 2023

Three years after the toughest US sanctions came into force, Huawei can triumph. In 2023, the Chinese group will record a 9% increase in its turnover, returning above the 700 billion yuan (89 billion euros) mark.

“After years of hard work, we managed to weather the storm. And now we are back on track,” welcomes Ken Hu, who holds the rotating presidency of Huawei, in a message sent to employees. And to add: “a shared conviction helped us break the siege and move forward together.”

New 5G smartphones

Even more encouraging: the increase in revenues accelerated significantly in the fourth quarter. The Shenzhen group recorded growth of 27%, posting a turnover of 243 billion yuan, almost as much as at the end of 2019.

This performance is largely explained by the launch at the end of August of the Mate 60 range, its first 5G smartphones since 2020, which recorded strong sales, notably allowing Huawei to regain, in October, first place in the Chinese market despite the launch of the new iPhones.

Patriotic momentum

Sales of these smartphones are notably boosted by a patriotic impulse, celebrating a company which was able to evade the restrictions imposed by Washington to lead a major technological advance for the country. The Mate 60s are in fact equipped with the first chip engraved in series in 7 nm by a Chinese founder.

The company, which has also been excluded from the deployment of 5G networks in many countries, is also reaping the fruits of its strategy of diversification towards activities in which it is not handicapped by American sanctions. However, its annual turnover remains 20% lower than in 2020, when Huawei briefly became the leading smartphone brand in the world again.
