Two-time Stanley Cup winner Dominik Hasek wished Russian goalkeeper Nikolai Khabibulin a successful return to professional sports at the age of 50.
On Wednesday, Torpedo signed a contract with Khabibulin until the end of the season. The goalkeeper will turn 51 on January 13. Khabibulin won the Stanley Cup in 2004 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning club.
— How do you feel about the fact that Nikolai Khabibulin can break your record as the oldest goalkeeper to play in the KHL?
— To be honest, until today I didn’t know that I was the oldest goalkeeper to play in the KHL. I learned about Nikolai’s return on Thursday morning and, of course, was surprised. Nikolai was an excellent goalkeeper, I remember him very well, especially from his time in Arizona and Tampa. I have my fingers crossed for him to make a successful return to the professional ice at home. Although I know that this will not be easy at his age and after several years without intensive training,” Match TV quotes Hasek as saying.
Hasek is the oldest goalkeeper in KHL history, the Czech goalkeeper played for Spartak Moscow against SKA (3:4) in 2011 at the age of 46 years and 29 days.
