Tragic News: Missing IPB Student Found Dead on Sempu Island

Malang – The search for Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) student Galang Edi Swasono (20 years) reported missing on Sempu Island, Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency, on Wednesday, December 27 2023 is now bearing fruit.

Galang was found dead in Semut Bay, Sempu Island area, on Friday, December 29 2023. Galang was found by fishermen because they saw a body floating in Semut Bay, at 07.30 WIB.

Head of the Surabaya SAR Office, Muhamad Hariyadi, said that after receiving reports from fishermen, the SAR Team carried out an evacuation. The body was successfully evacuated from the discovery location to the evacuation point on Sendang Biru beach, at around 07.50 WIB.

“The victim’s body was taken to the Saiful Anwar Hospital, Malang City for further treatment by authorized officers first, before being taken home by the family,” said Hariyadi.

Hariyadi said that during the process of searching for victims, the joint SAR team had carried out searches in the sea waters around Sempu Island using jukung boats belonging to Basarnas and also local fishing boats.

At the same time, land SRU carried out searches around Lele Lake on Sempu Island. The land SRU also disseminated information about the disappearance of victims to fishermen who were active around Sempu Island.

“The dissemination of this information is intended so that if there are fishermen who know the whereabouts of the victim, they are expected to immediately provide evacuation assistance or report the location of the victim to officers carrying out the search,” said Hariyadi.

Initial chronology Galang disappeared after being separated from the research group along with a number of other students in the Telaga Lele block, Sempu Island. The police then received a report from residents at 20.00 WIB, Wednesday, December 27 2023 yesterday.

Previously gathered students from Kalibening District, Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java. It is known that Galang is a student at the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, Department of Forest Resources Conservation and Ecotourism Semester 5.

Galang was declared missing after he was last seen at 09.00 WIB when he separated from a group of 29 people. The research was originally divided into two locations with details of Telaga Lele totaling 23 people and Segara Anakan location 5 people.

Research activities cover the fields of observing flora and fauna, caves and conservation photography. The expedition activities were chaired by Galang who also held the position of Herpetofauna observer.

“According to the witness’ statement, it was known that the person concerned was carrying out activities alone and at lunch time, it turned out that Galang had not returned,” said Head of Malang Police Public Relations, Ipda Muhammad Adnan.

When the group realized that Galang had not returned, dozens of students finally decided to start a search. As of 23.00 WIB last Wednesday, there was no sign of Galang.

The incident was then reported to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and then forwarded to the Polairud Post and Sumbermanjing Wetan Police. Joint officers, consisting of Polairud, Sumbermanjingwetan Police, TNI AL, and volunteers immediately responded to the report.

The search was carried out using a boat that searched the outermost points of Sempu Island. Officers encountered problems because in almost the entire Sempu Island area there were no communication signals that could be accessed.
