AFC officials agreed to postpone the round of 16 matches of the AFC Champions League, “the current version,” during meetings held yesterday.
Private sources revealed to Al-Riyadiah that the decision to postpone has already been taken and only the official announcement remains, after discussions took place between officials, in addition to requests from the qualified clubs. Yesterday, the Continental Confederation in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, drew the draw for the quarter-finals, and the date of its matches was set for February 12, 13 and 14, which conflicts with the final of the Asian Cup for teams on February 10, the tournament hosted by Doha, the Qatari capital.
The sources of the “Ajer Sports” account, via the “X” platform, revealed attempts by some Asian clubs to postpone the first leg matches of the round of 16 “for only one day” due to the awaited 2023 Asian Cup final, and the AFC will announce the new amendments after studying the scheduling.
It is noteworthy that the draw set up an exclusively Saudi confrontation between Al-Fayhaa and Al-Nasr, while Al-Hilal faces its Iranian counterpart, Sepahan, and Al-Ittihad faces Uzbekistan’s Nafbakhor, while Al-Ain meets Emirati Nasaf Uzbekistan.
Five teams had qualified in the first level of West Asian clubs: Al Hilal, Al Nasr, Al Ittihad, Al Ain of the Emirates, and Nasaf of Uzbekistan, while in the second level, Sepahan of Iran, Nafbakhor of Uzbekistan, and Al Fayha of Saudi Arabia had qualified.
Al-Nasr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ain clubs will play the first leg outside their home stadium, while the return matches will be played at their home stadium.
