Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn to Stand Trial Again for Diesel Scandal Market Manipulation

Dec 28, 2023 at 5:51 PM Update: 38 minutes ago

A German court has decided that former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn must stand trial again for his role in the so-called diesel scandal. According to the indictment, which was filed in 2019, Winterkorn is suspected of market manipulation.

The German justice department refrained from prosecuting at the beginning of 2021, but has now asked the judge to consider the case again.

According to the indictment, Winterkorn did not tell investors in time about the financial consequences of the tampering with the diesel cars. It is not yet known when the case will be heard.

Volkswagen admitted in September 2015 to cheating on emissions tests using illegal software. This made millions of diesel cars appear less polluting than they actually were. Volkswagen’s management is said to have initially tried to keep the scandal quiet.

The various lawsuits and claims have already cost Volkswagen more than 31 billion euros in recent years.

  • Once again, the judge rules that Volkswagen must pay damages for tampering

  • Volkswagen must also compensate damages for second-hand cars with tampering software
