After Sportbladet’s review of violent training in a riding stable, the business has been reported to the county administrative board.

The Swedish Equestrian Federation’s general secretary also reacts to the information in the review.

– It is something that I strongly distance myself from and it is completely unacceptable, says Johan Fyrberg, the equestrian association’s general secretary.

On Wednesday, Sportbladet published a review about a riding stable. There, several horse handlers who worked at the stable told me that they had seen how horses were subjected to excessive violence during training. This was also verified with pictures and videos.

The Swedish Equestrian Federation’s general secretary, Johan Fyrberg, reacts strongly after Sportbladet’s review.

– Like many, I feel that this is very upsetting and that violence against horses has no place in equestrian sports. It is something that I strongly distance myself from and it is completely unacceptable, says Johan Fyrberg.

He believes that the association takes these issues seriously and he welcomes this type of review on horse welfare.

– It is so important that everything comes to the surface and it is good if people who feel that some horse handling deviates from our core values - step forward.

This is how the union acts

What are you doing now that this has been discovered?

– I would be happy to take part in the stories and documents that have come to light. What we mainly do is that we ride in the connections and if there are connections to the equestrian association. What are the individual’s responsibilities and what connections might there be to the equestrian association, says Johan Fyrberg and continues:

– If it is about violence against horses, abuse, it must be reported to the police. I assume that it has been done. After all, it is the county administrative board that has supervisory responsibility when it comes to private business, and I assume that a report of concern has also been made.

How do you search for information about what happened?

– Among other things, by taking part in the review you have shown. Among other things, by looking at what comes into our many channels. It is important that people get in touch. We don’t see an onslaught right now, but it is very important that we are open and prepared.

If you have something you want to tell, what is the safest way to get there?

– You can send an email to our info address or contact me directly. If you want to contact us anonymously, and feel more secure about it, you can contact our member function. You can also contact the disciplinary structure directly.

This is a person who competes too. Could there be a question of disciplinary action?

– I cannot comment on the individual case, I know too little. But we take note of all the documents and see if there can be connections to us, says Johan Fyrberg.

Has been reported to the county board

Johan Fyrberg points out that it is clearly written in the association’s statutes that the horse’s welfare must be protected. If you don’t do that, you can’t be a member of the association.

– If you violate our core values, that you must protect the horse, then you cannot be a member of the Swedish Equestrian Association. To give a concrete answer to how to behave.

After Sportbladet’s review, several reports have been made to the county administrative board. The authority tells Sportbladet that on December 27, four reports of concern, what were previously called complaints, were received about the stable in question. The reports refer to material in Sportbladet’s review.

check Sportbladet also wanted to interview the Equestrian Association’s chairman Sandra Ruuda and sports manager Andrea Barth. We have expressed our wishes to the association’s press service, but none of them have responded.
