Departure wish at Ajax: ‘Amsterdammers willing to cooperate’

Gerónimo Rulli wants to leave Ajax in January, journalist Tim van Duijn of Voetbal International reported on Thursday afternoon. The 31-year-old goalkeeper from Argentina does not want to compete with Diant Ramaj. According to Van Duijn, Ajax wants to cooperate in an exodus of Rulli if there is a ‘right offer’.
Rulli is contracted to the Johan Cruijff ArenA until mid-2026, with the option for another season. Although the four-time Argentina international was brought to Ajax in January 2023 with sky-high expectations, he never really managed to leave a stable impression. The record champion seems to have more confidence in Ramaj, which makes Rulli want to leave.
Rulli only kept the opening match of the Eredivisie for Ajax this season, which was won 4-1 against Heracles Almelo. However, during the home game, the Argentinian had to be replaced after 32 minutes due to a shoulder injury.
His replacement in that game, Jay Gorter, then seemed to run away with his place under the crossbar. However, after the dismissal of coach Maurice Steijn, it was Ramaj who seized his opportunity as Ajax’s first goalkeeper. The now recovered Rulli has now been watching from the bench for seven games and sees that his competitor is doing well.
At the beginning of this year, Ajax paid around 8 million euros to free Rulli from Villarreal, where he was very popular. According to Transfermarkt, the closing price is still worth that amount. As a contract player for Ajax last summer, Rulli was linked to a rapid return to Villarreal, but also to a dream transfer to Bayern Munich. Due to his injury, a transfer was ultimately not possible.
All in all, this winter seems to be coming to an end to Rulli’s unhappy employment with Ajax, who missed no fewer than sixteen games this season due to an injury.
Rulli seems to end up with 26 official matches in Amsterdam service, in which he had to fish 25 times. The experienced Argentinian managed to keep his goal clean in eleven games.
