An old monastery in Heel, Limburg, was lost last night in a major fire. The national monument dates from the seventeenth century. Nothing is yet known about the cause.
The fire brigade responded in large numbers with fire engines, water trucks and aerial platforms, writes 1Limburg. During the night it was decided to stop extinguishing the fire. The area is poorly accessible for fire engines and an additional danger was that walls of the national monument could collapse.
“The building could no longer be saved,” a fire brigade spokesperson told the regional broadcaster. The monastery was already quite dilapidated and had been empty for years.

Instead of extinguishing the fire, the fire brigade focused on protecting the area with water so that the fire could not spread.
No one in the area had to be evacuated. Local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke released. The fire brigade checks to what extent harmful substances have been released, but according to the spokesperson there is little evidence of this.
In its current form, the national monument dates from the seventeenth century. The building was then used as a care complex. There were plans to give the building that role again, but these came to nothing.
