Volvo’s legendary red block engine is a success 25 years after its closure – on Youtube. The story of the world’s most durable engine that simultaneously won racing competitions has received over a million viewers.
Volvo produced its last red-block engine in 1998, then the sweet-singing five-cylinder engines took over, before it became four-cylinder VEA engines for the whole penny from 2017. In just seven years, there will be no combustion engines in Volvo cars. Now the red block engine is a hit on YouTube. A new mini-documentary about the mythical engine has become one of the most watched Volvo films during the year, with 1.1 million viewers.
The story begins as early as 1961 when Volvo introduced the B18 engine in the Volvo P1800, although it is not considered a true red-block engine. The B18 was a big step forward and had a five-bearing crankshaft instead of a three-bearing. Part of the secret behind the unique durability was that the bearings were larger than on a truck or a Ferrari V12 engine. In addition, the camshaft was driven by gears instead of a chain or belt. The result was the world’s most durable engine, which broke the world record with 515,000 miles in a car.

Then came the B20 which was very much a B18 with a larger cylinder diameter. The true red-block engine made its debut in 1975 when the Volvo 240 was launched with the B21 engine. The engine had an overhead camshaft with a timing belt and an aluminum cylinder head instead of iron. Still as extremely durable according to the movie.
According to the film, the pinnacle of the red-block era is the B21 Turbo with 155 horsepower that came in the Volvo 240 Turbo in 1980 and the B23 turbo with 182 horsepower that made its debut in the Volvo 760 in 1983. The proof that Volvo’s red-blocker can be the world’s best engine is that it managed to get 240- cars to win assembly line racing events in the ETC and DTM.
