Abu Dhabi: The country’s first liquor factory opened in the UAE. ‘Craft by Side Hustle’, a pub with a restaurant and microbrewery that serves alcohol, was launched in Al Maryah Island Mall, Abu Dhabi.
Chad McGehee, co-founder of Side Hustle Brews & Spirits, said: “We will ensure innovative and original food and drinks that meet the UAE’s high standards.”
Alcohol has been controlled in the country since the UAE was formed in 1971. But each emirate has different levels of restrictions.
Dubai has been a major commercial and tourist destination for decades due to its relaxed laws governing alcohol consumption.
The UAE abolished the 30 percent tax on alcohol sales in January this year at the request of Western tourists and expatriates.
There are reports that the suspension on taxes will last for one year.
Meanwhile, alcohol consumption is completely banned in Sharjah.
In 2021, the law was amended to allow alcohol license holders to ferment alcohol at the point of sale.
