JAKARTA – NASA opens opportunities for the wider community who want to take part in one of their upcoming space missions, through the program Message in a Bottle (Message in a Bottle).
Through the program, the United States space agency invites people to send their names to be engraved on a microchip, which will be inserted into the Europa Clipper spacecraft. The plane is planned to fly on a mission of 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion km), to enter the orbit of the planet Jupiter in 2030.
As the name suggests, the spacecraft carried a mission to research the smallest of the four Galilean moons orbiting the planet Jupiter, called Europa.
In this mission, NASA carries three main scientific objectives, namely to determine the thickness of the moon’s ice layer from the interaction of its surface with the ocean below, investigate its composition, and its geological characteristics. NASA hopes that NASA’s detailed exploration of the Europa mission will help scientists better understand the astrobiological potential of habitable worlds beyond planet Earth.
The Message in a Bottle program itself is taken from NASA’s long tradition of always trying to send inspirational messages with the spacecraft they have flown to explore the solar system so far.
Later, the names of the people engraved will also fly along with the engraving of a poem by United States Poet Laureate Ada Limon, entitled ‘In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa’.
This poem was presented at the Library of Congress in early 2023 when the NASA program campaign was first announced.
“Writing this poem was one of the greatest honors of my life, but also one of the most difficult assignments I have ever been given,” said Laureate Ada Limon.
Currently, it is reported that more than one million people have registered their names to be engraved on chips that will be flown with the Europa Clipper spacecraft to the planet Jupiter.
NASA is currently still opening opportunities for people who want to participate in the Message in a Bottle program, until the final deadline is midnight December 31 2023, United States time. For those who want to participate, you can go to the special page Massage in a Bottle which NASA provides on its official website.
