Italian footballer, former striker for Juventus and Chelsea, among others. Died from the effects of cancer. Won the Italian title in 1991 and 1995 and also won the Champions League with Juventus in 1996. In the final, then title holder Ajax was defeated on penalties. January 10: Jeff Beck (78)
British guitarist, one of the best of all time. Became famous in the 1960s with The Yardbirds, the band that also launched the musical careers of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Won six Grammy Awards and was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Read more here.
January 12: Lisa Marie Presley (54)
Daughter of Elvis and Priscilla. The American was a singer herself, she released three albums. Also known for a series of high-profile marriages, including Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. Read more about her life here.
January 14: Lieuwe Westra (40)
Dutch cyclist nicknamed The Beast, because he could cycle so fast and suffer. Won stages in the multi-day races Paris-Nice and the Dauphiné, became Dutch time trial champion twice. Suffered from depression and stopped cycling in 2017. Revealed in a book that he had used cortisone to cycle faster. Read more here.
January 18: David Crosby (81)
American musician, singer and guitarist with The Birds. From the late 1960s, the Crosby of the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, together with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. Later, Neil Young also joined. Read more here.
January 29: Heddy Lester (72)
Dutch singer, participated for the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977 with the song De Mallemolen and finished twelfth. In 2020, Lester starred in the film Greetings from Gerri, starring Frank Lammers.
February 8: Burt Bacharach (94)
American musician, composed more than five hundred songs for artists such as Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick, and was responsible for songs such as Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head and I Say A Little Prayer. Trijntje Oosterhuis still worked with him. Read more about his life here.
February 15: Raquel Welch (82)
American actress, sex symbol in the 1960s and 1970s when she appeared in a deerskin bikini in the film One Million Years BC Received a Golden Globe for her role in the 1973 film The Three Musketeers. Read more here.
March 1: Just Fontaine (89)
French footballer, scored thirteen times at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, the most goals by a player ever at a World Cup. After his football career, he was national coach of France and later of Morocco. Read more here.
2 March: Jos Heymans (72)
Parliamentary reporter, worked for more than twenty years in the Hague editorial office of RTL Nieuws. Retired in 2016, but continued to write political columns for the RTL Nieuws website. Read more about his life and work here.
March 7: Harry de Winter (73)
Program maker and presenter, made his breakthrough with the program Wintertijd. As producer, responsible for popular games such as Lingo and Boggle and series such as Oud Geld and Pleidooi. In the interview program Wintertijd he spoke to people about music. Read more here.
March 12: Dick Fosbury (76)
High jumper, inventor of the then revolutionary Fosbury flop, in which he jumped backwards and head first over the bar. Before that, high jumpers jumped with a roll jump, with one leg going over the bar first. Read more here.
March 17: Adri Duivesteijn (72)
Politician for the PvdA. As alderman, he was responsible for the construction of the Hague town hall. Was a Member of Parliament on the parliamentary inquiry committee that investigated construction fraud. The seasoned politician had been suffering from prostate cancer for years. Read more here.
March 27: Wim de Bie (83)
Comedian and writer, together with Kees van Kooten, formed the legendary duo Van Kooten and De Bie, which created satirical theater and was shown on TV at the VPRO as, among others, the Simplisties Verbond and Keek op de Week. At his death we made this video about him:
March 27: Thijs Slegers (46)
Football journalist, later press secretary of PSV. Before he died of leukemia, he appealed to become a blood and stem cell donor. Blood bank Sanquin and the Matchis Foundation received thousands of new donors as a result. Just before his death, his good friend Zlatan Ibrahimović addressed him in an emotional video. Theologian and poet, pastor in the Amsterdam Student Ecclesia in the 1960s who wanted to offer an alternative to the Latin mass. Had warm ties with the royal family, father of singer Trijntje and composer Tjeerd. Read more here.
April 25: Paul van Vliet (87)
Comedian, founded Cabaret PePijn in 1964, managed Theater PePijn where Youp van ‘t Hek, Herman Finkers and Theo Maassen, among others, performed in their early years. You can read more about Van Vliet here.
25 april: Harry Belafonte (96)
American singer, had Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) as a big hit. Fought for equal rights with Martin Luther King, arranged Nelson Mandela’s visit to the United States and in 2017 was co-organizer of the women’s march that took place the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as president of America. 27 april: Jerry Springer (79)
American presenter, in his Jerry Springer Show that was on TV for almost thirty years, guests regularly fought with each other while the audience shouted “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!” chanted. Previously (1977) he served as mayor of the city of Cincinnati. You can read more here.
24 mei: Tina Turner (83)
Legendary American singer, also called the Queen of Rock ‘n Roll. Had hits in the eighties such as Private Dancer, The Best and Tonight. Started her career with then husband Ike Turner, with the hits Proud Mary and River Deep, Mountain High. After her death we made this overview of her career:

Italian former Prime Minister, businessman and billionaire, started as an entertainer on cruise ships, led a business empire including newspapers and television and radio stations. Owner of football club AC Milan during the successful years with Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit. Read more here.
June 16: Gino Mäder (26)
Swiss cyclist, who crashed during a descent in the Tour of Switzerland, was resuscitated, but succumbed to his injuries in hospital a day later. You can read more here.
June 23: Willem Nijholt (88)
Actor, singer and dancer, played in dozens of musicals, films and theater plays from the 1960s onwards. He was seen on television in, for example, the children’s series Oebele and Can you tell me the way to Hamelin, sir? and in series such as De Stille Kracht and Willem van Oranje. Read more here.
June 29: Jan Stekelenburg (81)
Presenter of Studio Sport, he commented in 1996 on the match in which the Dutch volleyball men became Olympic champions. He worked in various positions at NOS from 1968 to 2022. You can read more here.
July 10: Marga Minco (103)
Writer, received the PC Hooft Prize in 2019 for her entire oeuvre. Her best-known book is The Bitter Herb (1957), in which she describes how she escaped deportation during the Second World War. You can read more about her here.
26 July: Sinéad O’Connor (56)
Irish singer, scored a world hit in 1990 with Nothing Compares 2 U, which was written by Prince. The video clip, in which she looked straight into the camera and let a tear roll down her cheek, was also enchanting. O’Connor was also a political activist who openly criticized the abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Converted to Catholicism and later to Islam. You can read more about the singer here.
August 23: Yevgeny Prigozhin (62)
Russian oligarch, leader of the Wagner mercenary army that fought in Ukraine, among other places, former confidant of Putin. Rebelled against the Kremlin two months before his death. A few weeks later his plane crashed after an explosion. You can read and see more about it in this article.
August 30: Jan Jongbloed (82)
Footballer, former goalkeeper of the Dutch national team. Worked as a goalkeeper for DWS, FC Amsterdam, Roda JC and Go Ahead Eagles. Defended the Dutch goal in the World Cup finals of 1974 and 1978. Later worked as an assistant coach and interim coach for Vitesse. Read more here.
31 augustus: Clairy Polak (67)
Journalist and presenter, she worked for radio programs such as De Klassieken and Met het Oog op Morgen and the television sections NOVA and Buitenhof. Received awards such as the Sonja Barend Award 2010 and the Honorary Silver Travel Microphone in 2014. You can read more about her here.
September 20: Erwin Olaf (64)
Photographer, exhibited at home and abroad. In 2013, he designed the new Dutch euro coins with King Willem-Alexander, who was inaugurated that year. Four years later he also made the official portraits of the royal family. We made this video about him:

Dutch actor who became known for series such as Dertigers, Oogappels, Hockeyvaders and Modern Love Amsterdam. He also played the leading role in the video for De Diepte, the song with which S10 represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022. You can read more here.

American-Canadian actor, became world famous for his role as Chandler in the American hit series Friends. Released a memoir in 2022 in which he talked about, among other things, his years of struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. You can read more here.
November 14: Karel van de Graaf (72)
AVRO presenter and journalist, presented, among others, Televizier, two seasons of Wie is de Mol? and radio program Met het Oog op Morgen. Received the Silver Reiss Microphone in 1981 for his radio work.
November 18: Ruud Geels (75)
Former footballer of Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV, among others, became top scorer in the Eredivisie five times and won the European Cup 1 with Feyenoord. He played twenty times for the Dutch national team and scored eleven times. Here you can read more about the life of the strong striker.

American diplomat and politician, Secretary of State and US National Security Advisor under Republican Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. You can read more about his glorious life in this article.
December 1: Nose Bos (79)
Film producer, writer and actor, head of the youth department of the VPRO from 1984 to 1989. Under his leadership, iconic programs such as Villa Achterwerk, Rembo & Rembo and Theo and Thea were launched.
December 6: Cilly Dartell (66)
Presenter, best known for the SBS6 program Hart van Nederland, which she presented from 1996 to 2012, and Shownieuws. Before she appeared on television, she worked in theater, first with various cabaret groups and theater companies, later she switched to musicals.
December 17: Linda van Dyck (75)
Actress, has appeared in TV series, films and theater plays since 1966. One of her legendary roles is that of Aunt Jans in Ciske de Rat (1984). You can read more here.
