The JN.1 variant is said to be the trigger for the current increase in COVID-19 cases, including in Indonesia and Singapore. Recently, reports emerged that a COVID-19 patient with variant JN.1 infection died in Batam, because he had a history of comorbid diseases and had not been vaccinated with a booster.
It is known that patient JN.1 was treated in the ICU and experienced severe symptoms. Head of the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Communications and Public Services Bureau, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said the patient had only received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the JN.1 variant has a high ability to spread. So, what about the severity of the symptoms?
“The continued growth of JN.1 shows that this virus is more easily transmitted or better at evading our immune system,” explained the CDC, quoted from Mirror News UK, Wednesday (27/12/2023).
“Currently, there is no evidence that JN.1 poses an increased risk of health publication compared to other variants currently circulating,” he explained further.
According to him, different COVID variants can cause different symptoms. However, experts warn that it is difficult to detect subtle changes in the symptoms of COVID-19 patients with different variant infections. The reason is, people have varying levels of antibodies, obtained from vaccines, natural infections, or both.
“It is currently unknown whether JN.1 infection causes symptoms that are different from other variants. The type of symptoms and how severe they are usually depend more on a person’s overall immunity and health than on the variant causing the infection,” the CDC explained.
So far, it is known that the symptoms of COVID-19 with variant JN.1 infection are similar to other diseases that often appear during winter, such as flu, colds or respiratory tract infections. These symptoms include:
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Muscle ache
- Fever
- Change or loss of taste or smell
- Stuffy nose and runny nose
- Fatigue
- ‘Brain fog’
- Hard to breathe
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (stomach pain, mild diarrhea)
