Ministry of Education Announces Historic Budget of Over $70 Billion for Next Year, Focus on Quality Education and Reduced Inequalities

Next year, the Ministry of Education will have a budget of more than $70 billion, a historic figure for that sector, which this year had exceeded its budget with $58 billion.

The announcement was made by that ministry, when presenting a closing balance for 2023, a year that left the draft statutory law to regulate the fundamental right to education at all levels in transit for debate in Congress.

“This year we have worked to sow the necessary conditions so that new generations of Colombians can enjoy their right to quality education,” said Vergara.

The statutory bill successfully closed its process in the First Committee of the House of Representatives, Vergara stated.

The minister thanked various sectors, including official institutions, the private sector, academia, the Congress of the Republic, international cooperation, the media and civil society for their participation in building consensus.

The budget assigned to the Ministry of Education this year exceeded 58 billion pesos, being executed, according to Vergara, efficiently and placing its portfolio in first place for compliance with its commitments and obligations in 2023.

For next year, a historic budget that exceeds 70 billion pesos is expected.

With the aim of reducing educational inequalities, the Ministry plans to increase coverage, dignify and strengthen teaching work, promote comprehensive training, improve physical and technological infrastructure, especially in rural areas, and enhance access to higher education.

“Committing to quality education as a fundamental right must be a commitment of the entire society.” The inclusion of 10,400 teachers in the official workforce by 2024 and the ‘Pedagogical Power’ program are concrete actions to support this commitment.

On the other hand, the creation of the PAE-MÁS was reported, which expands its reach during the school recess, reaching homes in nearly 100 municipalities in 17 departments and benefiting more than 600,000 boys and girls.

The head of the Education portfolio announced an allocation of 2 billion pesos in next year’s budget to serve approximately 6 million children.

With the ‘University in your territory’ strategy, we seek to enhance opportunities and improve educational infrastructure.

In the last year, according to Vergara, 364 improved campuses were delivered and more than 99 thousand students benefited from 79 new expanded schools.

The minister recognized the fundamental role of teachers as agents of change.

“Today we have a common purpose and that is to ensure that education becomes the transformative force to overcome the historical inequalities of our country,” he argued.

He invited the elected territorial authorities to articulate themselves with the Government’s educational policies and thereby seal a national agreement regarding the present and future of the new generations of Colombians.
