Nice presents – that’s how Dresden sports went on the long Christmas weekend
The Dresden Ice Lions got three points on Boxing Day, but things were completely different for the handball players from HC Elbflorenz. The DSC and the Titans also celebrated successes.

Dresden. Nothing contemplative – four Dresden clubs were active in their leagues around Christmas. But not everyone had reason to be happy.
Ice Lions win against Kaufbeuren
The ups and downs for the Ice Lions remain a reliable constant this season. After losing 2:3 (0:1, 2:2; 0:0) to the Eisbären Regensburg last Friday, the Dresden ice hockey professionals clearly won against ESV Kaufbeuren on Tuesday evening with 5:1 (2:0, 2: 1,1:0). In front of 4,004 fans, the hosts had to do without their captain David Suvanto, who was missing for good reasons. As his club announced on Facebook a few hours before the gamethe 29-year-old Swede has become a father.
Less pleasing: Despite the three points, Dresden is still in a play-down place in the table.
No points for Elbflorenz handball players
Four days after the unnecessary 28:31 home defeat against TV Hüttenberg on Friday (December 22nd), the handball players of HC Elbflorenz were unable to get any points from the league leaders. On Tuesday evening, the Dresden second division team lost 24:34 (11:17) to 1. VfL Potsdam in front of 1,568 spectators. So coach André Haber’s team is going into the upcoming European Championship break with a rather bad feeling before the league continues on February 9th.
Backcourt player Ivar Stavast will be the only Dresden professional to take part in the continental tournament in Germany.
Volleyball players confidently win against Wiesbaden
The Dresdner SC volleyball women confidently won the last game before Christmas against VC Wiesbaden on Friday evening with a score of 3-0 (25:15, 25:18, 25:21). Alexander Waibl’s protégés celebrated their ninth win on the eleventh Bundesliga matchday and defended third place.
On December 30th, the Dresden team will host USC Münster, eighth in the table, for the last competitive game of the old calendar year.
Titans basketball players win very late
Two days before Christmas Eve there was another real cracker game in the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA. Only after double extra time did the Dresden Titans emerge victorious in the encounter against Garzenzaun24Baskets Paderborn with 100:106. Thanks to their success, Dresden climbed to eighth place in the table, which would be enough for the play-offs.
The next game for head coach Fabian Strauß’ team is scheduled for Wednesday. From 7 p.m. we will play against league leaders Medipolis SC Jena. “We will experience a completely different game against Jena than against Paderborn,” says Strauss. “If we have good and bad phases there, it will weigh on us. However, I’m looking forward to the game because we can prove ourselves against a top team.”
