Russia Attacks Train Station in Kherson, Ukraine – One Dead, Four Injured

Jakarta

Russia attacked a train station full of civilians in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. The incident killed at least one person and injured four others.

“Kherson at night. About 140 civilians were waiting at the station for an evacuation train. That’s when the enemy started a massive bombardment of the city,” said Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko in a post on Telegram, as reported by the AFP news agency, Tuesday (26/12/2023).

One policeman was killed and two civilians and two police officers were injured by shrapnel, he said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that “a number of civilians were at the scene” when the attack occurred, adding that rescue services were also at the scene.

Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsya said on Telegram that its trains and stations were damaged but “the situation is under control and the trains are ready to continue functioning.”

The city of Kherson was occupied by Russian troops shortly after Moscow invaded Ukraine at the end of February 2022.

Under the pressure of the Ukrainian forces, the Russian forces finally retreated to the other side of the Dnipro river that runs along the city.

Since then, the city has been frequently bombarded by the Russians. Earlier on Tuesday (26/12), the head of Kherson’s military administration, Roman Mrochko, said that the city had been under sustained attack by Russia over the past 24 hours, injuring four people, including one in serious condition.
