Representatives of Yemen’s Houthis have issued a serious threat targeting strategically important undersea fiber optic cables running near the Yemeni coast. These cables are key communication arteries connecting Europe with India, the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and Iran.
The Houthis, who have already proven their ability to carry out threats, have warned of the possibility of blowing up these cables. They have previously made good on their promises to attack civilian ships in the Red Sea heading to Israel. Therefore, their intentions regarding submarine cables look very realistic.
The consequences of blowing up these cables could be catastrophic, even worse than the consequences of a violent military conflict. Such an act would disrupt interbank transactions and severely impact the economies of many countries, leading to a global disruption in communications and financial flows.
