President Chan Santokhi and first lady Mellisa Santokhi-Seenacherry attended the Christmas Pontifical High Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul today. During the Christmas high mass in which it is celebrated that Jesus Christ was born as a child, Bishop Karel Choennie indicates that he had been thinking about the children in Suriname all year long.
“And today on this Christmas Day the child is central. Children are not ‘made’, but are divine gifts that we cherish and care for, just like the care that Mary and Joseph devoted to Jesus,” the bishop shares. “Let us approach the education of children as the cultivation of divine souls.”
Bishop Choennie also emphasizes the impact of domestic violence and sexual violence on children. Furthermore, the cleric made a strong appeal to educators, emphasizing that it is very important not to ruin the future of young people, but rather to encourage them to fully develop their potential.
The head of state received the bishop’s solemn blessing amid the majesty of music, song and inspiring lectures in the basilica.
