China’s Largest Photovoltaic Power Plant Begins Operating in Qinghai Province, Generating 900MW

Xining, December 26, 2023 (Xinhua) – A photovoltaic power plant with a generating capacity of 900 MW began operating last Sunday in Qinghai Province, northwest China.

According to the China Three Gorges Corporation, this is the second phase project of a high-voltage power line that will transport electricity from Qinghai to Henan Province in central China.

The photovoltaic project, located in Gonghe County of Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, covers an area of about 1,540 hectares at an altitude of 3,000 meters in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the company said.

This project will generate about 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity on average annually, which is equivalent to saving about 640 thousand tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.74 million tons.

Qinghai Province is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and is rich in clean energy resources, such as water, wind energy and solar energy, making it an ideal place for the development of new energy industry.
