María Isabel, a unique and brilliant woman
The work focuses on the figure of María Isabel Matamala Vivaldifrom the mid-60s to the end of the 70s. A restless, consistent, questioning, active and activist woman.
The work begins with discussions about Paulo Freire, the role of education and the effects of the capitalist system.
“Read to understand. “To understand is to exercise democracy.”they say. “The educator is an artist. “He remakes the world, he redraws it.”
María Isabel, named “Raquel”, along with her colleagues and, especially, some colleagues, want to change an unjust world. Unequal.
“If we wanted to make the revolution, we had to try to change the Party from within.”
But the coup d’état arrives. There are no weapons. The MIR calls to resist in the country, not to go into exile. María Isabel goes into hiding until she is arrested on February 5, 1975.
Then comes the prison in Villa Grimaldi (Terranova Barracks), the torture. The detainees disappeared, the companions murdered. Then the transfer to Cuatro Álamos and Tres Álamos. With a visit to an establishment in Soquimich, between June and September 1975.
Then came exile in Sweden, party work and, finally, his resignation from the party.

A work that illuminates
María Isabel is an attractive, critical work that shows, from the dreams of the 60s and 70s, the naivety (which, with the perspective of time, seems incomprehensible) during the Popular Unity, the crimes of the dictatorship and internal problems of the MIR.
Although part of what the work shows is not new (Villa Grimaldi, Miguel Krassnoff, etc.), the female perspective is interesting. Much more interesting is the feminist perspective of María Isabel Matamala and a group of militants (Ana María Moreira Fuenzalida, Nelly Pinto Contreras, Amelia Negrón Larre, Bernardita and Rosa) on the MIR. This is less known.
While imprisoned in Tres Álamos, they carried out a survey and a report on machismo within the party. A pioneering and revolutionary work for the time. For the circumstances they were experiencing.
María Isabel, with a successful staging, is a good invitation to look at our history from another perspective. To reflect and question(s). A work that can be uncomfortable, perhaps a little complacent, but that gives hope.
