- Czechs sent fewer text messages on Christmas Day than in previous years, and the same applies to calls
- On the contrary, the volume of data traffic is constantly growing
- For O2 and T-Mobile, data transfer increased by 24 percent year-on-year
Let’s start with the operator O2. Its customers made a total of 13,314,965 calls, sent 8,216,977 SMS messages and 307,047 MMS messages during Christmas Day 2023. The busiest time for calling and sending SMS was traditionally in the morning from 10 to 11 o’clock. The number of calls fell by 3.4 percent compared to last year, and the number of text messages sent by 17.3 percent. In contrast to calls and texting, the volume of data traffic is constantly growing – it increased by a total of 24.9% to 3,763,900 GB on Christmas Day compared to last year.
Data traffic is increasing every year. This year we hit a record on Christmas Day – 3,763,900 GB of data. If we look at history, for example in 2018, i.e. five years ago, we see an eightfold increase in the volume of transferred data compared to the total traffic.
On the contrary, the number of calls made and SMS messages sent is decreasing. Ten years ago, in 2013, 27,961,240 SMS messages were sent on the O2 network on Christmas Day. That was twice as many as any normal weekday that year. Mobile voice traffic is in a similar situation. On Christmas Day 2013, the number of all mobile calls was 15,763,134.
Beginning and end of the school year
However, this trend changes throughout the year. Christmas and New Year are no longer the busiest days on the network in terms of calls and texts. The number of calls made on Christmas Day this year was roughly half that of a normal working day, and in terms of the number of connected calls roughly comparable to weekend traffic.
The hour with the largest voice traffic this year surprisingly fell on September 4 and June 30, i.e. the beginning and end of the school year. On these days, the most calls were made between ten and eleven in the morning.
Christmas Day at T-Mobile
Data traffic on Christmas Day in the T-Mobile network also increased by almost 24% year-on-year. The hour of the highest data traffic was between 21:15 and 22:15. Calls were 5.5% less than in the previous year – a total of 7.8 million calls were made, the busiest time was between 10-11 in the morning, when over 1.7 million calls.
For comparison, the busiest day in terms of calls in the T-Mobile network took place on September 4, 2023 (the first day of school), when approximately 17.4 million calls were made. The number of SMS and MMS is decreasing every year, communication with loved ones is moving to the online space. T-Mobile also brings Advent weeks to its customers every year in the My T-Mobile application, part of the fourth Advent week included unlimited data for the weekend, which was picked up by over 121,000 customers in the application.
Almost 70% of customers watched Magenta TV yesterday. As in previous years, Czech fairy tales scored the most on TV on Christmas Day. The most watched titles were Horned Love, The Immortal Aunt and The Secret of the Old Bambi. From foreign productions, Láska nebeská, Shrek and Sám doma scored points.
