Never before have so many debit card payments been made at store cash registers as last Saturday. It is estimated that more than 25 million payments were made with a debit card, worth approximately 809 million euros. This is reported by the Dutch Payments Association.
The number of debit card payments is 15 percent higher than on the busiest days in 2022 and 2019 and the total amount is approximately 10 percent higher. Many shops were closed during the corona years 2020 and 2021.
The busiest moment was Saturday afternoon at 2:15 p.m., when almost a thousand debit card payments were made per second.
The day before, on Friday, it was very busy at the Geldmaten. Money was withdrawn more than 650,000 times, worth approximately 173 million euros, 3 percent more than the Friday before Christmas of 2022.
